Anger in itself is not bad, it is an emotion and it’s unhealthy for you not to allow yourself feel your emotions.
What’s bad however, is how you react to that emotion, how you express your anger. The way you express your anger is very important, because it can destroy even the most beautiful things. One wrong step while angry can cancel the one million good things you have done or you are building.
I remember one time I held a position while in secondary school. I had so much dreams for that post, I’m someone that loves to impact even in the most tiniest way. I was indeed happy for that opportunity to effect changes and make the impacts I wanted. I wanted to be that great leader who would move the club forward and definitely leave a legacy, but none of the things I wanted happened.
My teammates lacked team spirit, our president at that time, would in fact take decisions without informing the rest of us but once they encounter any problem, they will then turn back to us. This infuriated me all the time, that I started disassociating myself from everything that had to do with the club – Enugu States Schools Against Aids. I needed for them to bear the consequences of their decisions, so that they would understand the importance of including all the leaders. This however, never made anything better, in fact it made me look unserious and incapable of handling the position I was given.
In my anger, I failed to understand that I was becoming more like the people I was criticizing and even worse because they at least were showing up and carrying out their responsibilities. I failed to understand that the important thing should be how to remedy the situation so that the club moves forward, to carry out my responsibility effectively so that the club doesn’t suffer and they see the importance of involving every leader.
I was not able to achieve all the wonderful plans I had, I allowed my anger make me lose an opportunity to impact people, something I enjoyed doing.
There’s no way you will ever make a good decision when angry, it’s just not possible. Believe me, you would most definitely regret any decision taken in the heat of that passion. This is the reason is very important to remain calm in the face of problem or challenges. You must master calmness, if not, you would hardly win any battle.
Give yourself time to breath, feel and process your emotions, this helps you to relax and think of the perfect solution to your problem.
